Chapter 6: South Water Street
Nunzio worked at the kitchen table with the tablet and two phones.
Nobody in the kitchen went back to the lists.
The cooks stood by the stove and pretended to count trays.
Teresa made coffee no one drank.
Sal stayed against the fridge with his arms crossed, watching Giovanni.
It took Nunzio forty minutes.
"Her car hasn't moved since Friday morning. It's in the garage. Her bank card hasn't been used since Friday afternoon. Forty-one dollars at Pawtucket Lumber."
"And the phone?"
"Off since Monday night. Around ten thirty. Then it came on once. Nine thirty-eight this morning. Four minutes. The text went out."
"Then it went off again."
"Where?"
Nunzio turned the tablet around.
A map. A blue circle over the river, downtown.
"It hit the tower on South Water Street. That covers maybe six blocks."
Giovanni looked at the map.
He knew those blocks.
Everyone at that table knew those blocks.
Serafina's apartment was on the ninth floor of the old mill building on South Water Street.
Giovanni had paid the deposit on it.
"Half of downtown lives there," he said.
"Sure, boss."
"She could have been walking along the river."
"Sure."
"Get the cameras on that street. Every building that has one."
Nunzio nodded and didn't look up.
Giovanni took his coat from the hook.
"Where are you going?" Sal asked.
"Out."
My father's truck was still at the gate when we drove through it.
He was asleep behind the wheel, his head against the window.
