Chapter 10: Lunch
I went to lunch.
I went on my own terms, in my own clothes, with my own coat buttoned to my chin.
I made the driver wait while I drove Aurelio back to his car, and I told Aurelio to stay out of it until I was done.
He did not want to.
He stood at the window of my mother's Ford in the cold, with his hands braced on the roof.
"Ximena, don't," he said.
"If I don't go, he sends the Lincoln to my mother's house," I said.
"Yes," he said.
"I'd rather go to him."
He looked at me for a long time.
"Then I'm coming," he said.
"You come after. Late." I started the engine. "If you're there when I walk in, I'm yours. If I'm alone, he has to decide who I am without you in the room. I want to see what he does."
I drove away before he could answer.
The Candelas' restaurant at noon on a Sunday was closed to the public and full of the smell of garlic and simmering tomato.
The back booth sat under a stained-glass window of a saint, and Gaetano was already in it.
He rose when I came in.
He stood up, the old man, in his gray cardigan and good jacket, and held a chair out for me with a small courtly bow.
