Chapter 14: No Again

He was gone from the bed when I woke, and the quilt on his side was already cold.

I found him in the kitchen at six, in yesterday's shirt.

He stood at the window with a cup of my mother's coffee going cold in his hand.

My mother was at the stove making eggs and pretending the kitchen had no one else in it.

"I'm going to the house on Gladstone," Aurelio said, without turning around. "Today. I'll go in at the front door and say it to his face."

"Say what?" I said.

"That the girl is mine, and the child, and he can't have either."

"In his house."

"In the room. With him." He set the cup down. "I'll tell him I'm done saying yes. I'll fix it there."

I sat down at the table.

My mother put a plate in front of me and a second one in front of the empty chair, and did not look at either of us.

"Sit," I said.

He sat.

I looked at the man I had slept next to, at the new gray in his jaw.

I thought about the church-hall kitchen and the voice that had come out of him there.

"No," I said.

He raised his eyes.

"No," I said again. "That's twice I've told you. You're not walking into that house at his word and calling it brave."

"It isn't at his word."

"It's his house, Aurelio. His driver, his men, his room." I kept my voice level. "On a laundromat floor you told me the truest thing you know, and it was that you're afraid of him."

He flinched.
