Chapter 4: He Does Not Hear No

I decided to quit the Gull before breakfast.

I had the speech ready when someone knocked on the apartment door at eight.

Pru got there first, in her socks, with a spoon in her mouth.

"Oh my God," she said around it. "Calla. Calla, it's the guy from the newspaper."

Bram Wainwright stood in the hall with two paper coffee cups and no tie.

"I didn't know how you take it," he said to me.

"How did you get my address?"

"The hospital had it on file. You'd have been easy to find even if they hadn't."

"That's stalking," Pru said, helpfully. She did not close the door.

"It's research," said Bram.

I took the coffees out of his hands, set them on the shoe rack, and stepped onto the landing, pulling the door nearly shut.

"Mr. Wainwright."

"Bram."

"I don't know what you think last night was," I said. "I'm a waitress. You were upset about your brother. I'm sorry. Please don't come back."

"No," he said.

"I wasn't asking."

"I know. I'm answering." He leaned against the rail. "You didn't tell me why you tap your wrist, and you've been very polite about not telling me. I want to know what you'd do if I stopped being polite."

"I'd call the police."

"They know my family," he said, without any pride at all. "They'd send a car, and I'd drive you to work."

I stared at him.

"I'm not joking," he said.

"That's what's wrong with you."

His mouth moved. It was nearly a smile.

"Good," said Bram. "Keep going."

I went back inside and shut the door in his face, and Pru put both hands on my shoulders and shook me.

"Calla Salisbury. What did you do in the harbor?"

I went to work that night with a letter of resignation in my apron.

The owner met me at the door of the Gull, grey in the face, holding a stack of papers.
