Chapter 9: Ninety Days
In the morning he had folded the blanket into a square on the arm of the couch and was gone.
For one bad second I thought he had left for good.
Then I saw him through the window, sitting on the porch steps in the cold with his coffee, looking at the street.
I put on a sweater and went out and sat down next to him.
"You slept," I said.
"Three hours."
"On my couch."
"On your couch."
He said it flatly, as a fact he had checked twice.
"Okay," I said. "Here are the terms."
He turned to face me.
"Ninety days, like you said. You see Rosetta Tuesday and Thursday after school and Saturday mornings, and I'm there for all of it. No lawyers, as long as that holds. She hears one thing from us, which is that you're her father and we're both her people."
"Yes."
"If she gets scared, it stops. If you have a night like Thursday, you tell me, and we do it again another day."
"Yes."
"And you and I don't touch."
He went very still.
"Last night was a mistake."
I hadn't meant to use that word.
I felt it land again.
"Last night was me being tired," I said. "Rosetta comes first. Nobody touches anybody for ninety days. If you can't agree, say so now."
"I agree."
"Good."
"But I want it on the record that I'd rather you hit me."
"Noted."
"Carina."
"What?"
"Thank you for the couch."
I stood up so fast my sweater caught on a nail.
The porch rail, I thought.
It was loose, and it had been loose since I moved in, and Sullivan had looked at it twice.
