Chapter 16: The Boy at the Rail

Caleb's POV

I stayed two cars behind the gray sedan all the way down Water Street.

It pulled to the curb at the side entrance of the Reed Freight tower, and I put the truck half on the sidewalk behind a delivery van.

Landon Reed got out of the back with the boy in his arms.

Max had gone rigid, with his headphones jammed on and his eyes squeezed shut.

Landon carried him in, holding him away from his own jacket.

I had my hand on the door handle.

I could have gone after them, and that would have been the end of it.

A guard would have stopped me at the desk, and Landon would have told the lobby that a harbor contractor had attacked him, and every word would have gone into a petition.

So I got out slowly, walked to the glass, and stood where I could see in.

The lobby was all marble and echo, with a revolving door at the front and a smaller glass door at the side.

Landon set Max on his feet in the middle of it.

I watched the boy cover both ears.

A floor polisher started up somewhere behind the desk, and a security radio squealed.

Landon had his phone to his ear and his back turned.

"Where are you?" I could read his mouth from the street. "Camille. Where are you?"

Max stood very still for about as long as he could stand it.

Then he looked at the side door, where a man in a delivery uniform was backing out with a dolly.

The door swung wide, and Max went through it.
