Chapter 13: Avery's Grand Gesture
I spent Sunday night turning Lydia's confession into a scoring system.
On Tuesday at four I climbed the stairs to her studio with forty-one dahlias in my arms.
Peonies were out of season, and Duncan had flown his in from Chile.
I did not want to beat his budget, only his number, by one.
The nine-year-old with the song she disliked was packing a violin case on the student's stool.
"You're the lady from the newsletter," the girl said.
"I'm a coach," I said.
"You're holding a lot of flowers for a coach," the girl said.
Lydia came out from behind the piano with her sleeves pushed up.
She saw the dahlias and stopped as if I had set off a smoke alarm.
"That's forty-one," Lydia said.
"Duncan sent forty," I said.
"I know how many Duncan sent," Lydia said, "because I gave them to a cat."
"Then I win by one," I said.
"You don't win flowers by one, Avery," Lydia said.
"Everything is won by one," I said.
The girl looked from her teacher to me and clicked the case shut.
