Chapter 14: Literal Hour
Nina had told Lydia to come too, and nobody had told me.
I found them at noon on the bench by the Esplanade, one at each end.
Nina's orange jacket was visible from the river, like a traffic cone.
"Sit," Nina said. "You're ten seconds late."
"There's no start time on a bench," I said.
"There is today," Nina said.
She set a kitchen timer on the slats, shaped like a ceramic chicken, and twisted the dial to sixty.
The chicken began to tick.
"This is the Literal Hour," Nina said. "Every sentence starts with I like, I want or I'm afraid."
"What are the penalties?" I asked.
"A joke adds a minute," Nina said. "A plan adds two."
"That's unfair to people with plans," Lydia said.
"That's a minute," Nina said.
Lydia closed her mouth and folded her hands over her purse.
"Avery first," Nina said.
I looked at the river, where a single scull was drawing a thin white line.
"I want to have a strategy for how this goes," I said.
