Chapter 15: Lydia's POV: Recital
Lydia's POV
My students' fall recital took place in a church hall with forty folding chairs, and I had planned the closing piece for six weeks.
It was a Bach partita, fully memorized and cleanly marked.
Gesture 29 sat in my case on a card that said: Play the hard one, end on the high note, look at her once.
I had never looked at an audience once in my life, so I was going to practice that in the coat room.
At six the families came in with casseroles and folded programs.
The nine-year-old's grandfather took the front row with a cane across his knees.
Avery came in at five past, in burgundy, and stood at the back with her hands in her pockets.
She had no flowers, and I noticed that first, and then I noticed that I was glad.
She gave me a small nod across the chairs, the nod she gives her rowers when the water is flat.
I nodded back.
The recital began with a boy of six who played Twinkle Twinkle at the speed of a man chased by a dog.
