Chapter 17: Nina's Date
On Saturday morning the newsletter ran my middle finger across the whole front page.
The caption said: SHE SAID YES! Beneath it, in a smaller font, Duncan had added: Ring is a work in progress.
I read it twice on my stoop with a coffee, and then I put the phone face down on the bakery step.
Lydia sat next to me in a gray sweater, eating the heel of a baguette.
"You look wonderful in it," Lydia said. "The lighting is very kind."
"My finger is the villain of this picture," I said.
"Your finger is the only honest person in it," Lydia said.
Nina came around the corner at ten past ten in her orange jacket, with her hair brushed and a lipstick I had never seen.
She stopped at the bottom of the steps and looked at the two of us side by side, like a woman counting a bill.
"I have a date," Nina said.
"With who?" I asked.
"The photographer," Nina said. "He asked me yesterday, when I returned his lens cap."
I stared at her.
"He's Duncan's photographer," I said.
