Chapter 22: Lydia's POV: Blank Card

Lydia's POV

I woke in Avery's bed under a low white ceiling, which I had imagined wrong.

I had pictured it higher, with a chandelier, because I am that kind of person.

On the pillow beside me was a folded note in square capital letters.

It said: GONE TO ROW. BACK AT 8. DON'T LEAVE. I'M ASKING.

I read it four times.

Yesterday on the footbridge I had said yes before she finished the question.

I had not had a card for it, and I had not even had an opening line.

I had said, "Yes, please," like a woman answering a waiter.

Then she had asked again in a plainer voice, and I had stood there with the cold on my teeth and understood a thing I had refused to know.

She did not want a performance, and she had never wanted one, and I had been polishing one for her for a month.

The rest of the night belongs to me, and I am keeping it.

I got up slowly and put on the burgundy cardigan, which she had left on the chair, with the sleeves ending at my forearms.
