Chapter 23: Heathrow

Terminal 5 at five in the morning smelled of floor polish and coffee.

Dylan stood by the bag-drop with one suitcase and the jacket he had worn for three weeks.

He looked smaller without a script.

"You came," he said.

"I said I would."

"You said you'd think about it."

"I thought about it on the Tube."

He laughed once, short and surprised.

We walked together toward the security lanes.

It was the same walk I had refused to take in Boston, only in the opposite direction, and I noticed that my pulse was perfectly steady.

"My mom's already planting tomatoes," he said. "In November. She's furious at the weather. She says the house feels different, now that nobody's holding it."

"I'm glad."

"I wrote Piper a letter. A real one. I'm putting it in the mail when I land so she has time to decide if she wants it."

"That's good."

"I'm not asking you for anything." He stopped by the barrier. "I know you don't owe me a conversation. I just wanted to say the last thing right."

I waited.

"You were never the one I should have worried about less," he said. "You were the one I should have asked."

"Yes."

"I'm going to learn to ask."

"Start with your mother."

He smiled, and it was the old smile, crooked at one side, without the trick in it.
