Chapter 7: Who Holds the Leash

On Monday I walked into a lecture hall at Imperial with a cup of coffee and a purpose.

I was not going to let Dylan have my first week.

The hall held about ninety people from thirty countries, all of us in the same program, and none of us knew anyone.

I sat in the fourth row next to a tall man who asked if I wanted the outlet.

"You can have it," I said. "I've already lost one thing this week. I don't want to start a streak."

He laughed.

By the end of the introductions the row behind me was asking where I was from, and I said Ohio, and a girl from Dublin said, "Is that the one with the corn?"

"That's Iowa."

"Is it the same?"

"Please don't say that near an Ohioan."

It felt like air.

For three hours nobody on earth knew about Piper.

At noon I went home, because the rule was the rule and because I had a decision to make.

I put the laptop on the kitchen counter and opened my bank account.

$6,200.00. LANDRY FAMILY FUND. Goodwill.

It looked like my money.

It was also a leash, and Dylan was already showing it around.

I knocked on Owen's door at one.

He opened it in a T-shirt with a hole at the collar and said, "You've had lunch."

"I've had a sandwich."

"That counts."

His flat was the same layout as mine, turned upside down.
