Chapter 15: Not His Name

Two deputies stood in the yard light with their hands near their belts.

Dominic walked out first, carrying the canvas bag in one hand and nothing in the other.

I came behind him, and Preston staggered out last, holding his cheek.

"Evening, Deputy," Dominic said. "I'm Dominic Greaves."

The older deputy lowered his flashlight.

"I know who you are," he said. "I went to school with your father's driver. You've been gone a while."

"Six years."

"We got a call that somebody was stealing from the Greaves safe."

"My father left me a third of this yard," Dominic said. "I'm a shareholder, and I'm taking papers that concern a loan on my own company's books. Nobody stole anything."

"Mrs. Greaves says otherwise."

"Mrs. Greaves isn't here."

The deputy turned his light on Preston.

"Son, is this man stealing from you?"

Preston looked at his brother, and at me, and at the bag.

He opened his mouth.

I watched him do the math, the same slow math he did over every restaurant check.

If he said yes, the deputy would ask what the papers were, and then the papers would be read.

"It's a family thing," Preston muttered.

"That's not an answer."

"It's a family thing. Nobody's stealing."

The deputy looked at him a moment longer.

"Then I'm writing it up as a family matter," he said. "Mr. Greaves, I'd keep those where a judge can find them."
