Chapter 19: The Call Comes Due

I dressed in under a minute.

Dominic stood in the doorway with his arms folded, shirtless, and did not move out of Constance's way or let her in.

"You can read it in the hall, Mother," he said.

"I would rather read it somewhere with light." She turned. "The lobby."

"Fine," I said.

I came out with my hair loose and my shoes in my hand and walked past her to the elevator.

The lobby of the Front Street hotel was marble and brass, with a night clerk behind the desk, a bellhop with a luggage cart and two men at the bar watching a ball game.

Constance stopped in the middle of the floor, so that everyone could see her.

She was good at it.

"Please read the notice," she said to her lawyer.

He took the letter from the envelope.

"Notice of default. The undersigned lender, Constance Greaves, hereby calls the full balance of the note held against Haldane & Daughter, in the amount of three hundred eighty thousand dollars, payable at midnight tonight, pursuant to the renewal executed the ninth of April..."

"Stop," I said.

"I beg your pardon?"

"The renewal executed the ninth of April. Read me that date again."

He frowned.

"The ninth of April."

Dominic came out of the elevator behind me with the canvas bag over his shoulder.

He set it on the front desk.

I took out the folder marked HALDANE and laid both pages in front of the lawyer.
