Chapter 7: The Kitchen

Sunday lunch at the Greaves house was a roast and eleven relatives, and I carried plates into the kitchen because it was the only room without Constance in it.

The kitchen was big and white, with a marble island and a window over the sink.

Dominic was at the counter, carving the last of the beef.

I put the plates down.

"She knew," I said.

He stopped with the knife in his hand.

"Who?"

"Your mother. About Preston and Brooke. Since April."

He set the knife down very carefully.

"Brooke told you this?"

"In the ladies' room. She was crying too hard to lie."

"And my mother told her to keep going until the wedding."

"Yes."

He looked at the doorway to the dining room, where Constance's laugh floated in over the clink of glasses.

"That's her," he said, in a voice I had not heard from him before. "That's exactly her."

"Why would she want him to cheat on me?"

"She doesn't want him to. She wants him happy until the ring is on your finger for good." He rubbed the back of his neck. "She's never once let anything go off the schedule."

"The schedule."

"Her whole life is a calendar."

I pressed the heels of my hands against my eyes.

"I'm so tired of being handled," I said.

"Then stop letting them."

"It's not that simple."
