Chapter 9: Dominic's POV: The Ring
Dominic's POV
My mother kept her study the way she kept everything, with every pen in its place and every paper squared to the edge of the desk.
I stood in the doorway at nine that night with the ring's stamp still burning in my head.
"Mother," I said. "I need to ask you about a ring."
She did not look up from her ledger.
"Close the door, Dominic."
I closed it.
She finished the line she was writing, capped her pen and folded her hands.
"Which ring?"
"The one on Margot Haldane's finger."
"Ah."
That was all she said.
I had braced for a lie.
"You ordered it two years ago," I said. "I was in the room when you picked the stone. You told me it was for my wife."
"It was."
"Then why is it on Preston's fiancée?"
"Because you were not there to put it on her."
The study was very quiet.
Out in the hall, a clock I had known since I was six struck the quarter hour.
"I left this house six years ago," I said. "Two years ago you wrote to me in Lisbon and told me to come home and marry someone I had never met."
"A good girl from a good family," she said.
"I said no."
"You said no by letter from Lisbon. You told me you would not be arranged like a prize bull."
"I meant it."
"I know you did."
Her voice was gentle, and that was worse.
"I had the dinner booked, Dominic. Raymond Haldane and his daughter, at this table. I waited an hour. I called you twice. Then I sent word to the Haldanes that my elder son was indisposed."
