Chapter 10: The Squash Club

Nathan's POV

I found my brother at the squash club at nine that night, drinking a beer alone in the lounge.

I hadn't been in the same room with Colin for three years.

He looked older.

He had the same dark blond hair our father used to have.

His left eye didn't follow me when I crossed the room.

I sat down across from him without asking.

"Nate," he said. "What are you doing here?"

"Simone Kinross."

Colin's hand stopped halfway to his beer.

"Who told you?"

"Jean did."

"Jean doesn't know that."

"Jean has known for three years," I said. "She's afraid of nothing now except what you've done to her."

Colin set the bottle down.

For the first time in my life I saw my little brother go gray in the face.

"She's going to leave me."

"Ask her."

"She's too scared to leave."

"Of what?"

He didn't answer.

"Of her parents going to prison?" I said. "That was the deal you gave her. You knew what she'd pick."

"I didn't make that up."

"Then who did?"

He looked at his hands.

I waited.

In the ER I had learned that the quiet ones always talk if you let the silence go long enough.

"Cor," he said finally.
