Chapter 17: Not an Alliance

Jean's POV

The letter from my father was one page long, and I read it twice in the dark of my own car outside Nathan's building.

"Jeanie. I'm no good at this on paper. Let me say it to your face. I'll come to your door when your mother is asleep. Dad."

I folded it into my coat.

I hadn't known I was going to drive to Capitol Hill until I was already parked.

Nathan came out of the lobby in his scrubs with his coat over one arm and stopped three steps from my window.

I rolled it down.

"Simone found me in the garage," he said.

"What did she want?"

"To tell you something about the ER night. I'd rather you heard it from me."

"Nathan, get in."

"Jean."

"Please."

He got into the passenger seat and sat with his hands on his knees.

"I stood in the corridor for four minutes," he said. "You were getting into his car. I had my hand on your arm, and you looked at me, and I let go."

"I know."

"I should have..."

"I looked back from the passenger seat," I said. "You were still standing there. Everyone else had gone in, and you were still under the light."

He turned his head.

"I thought about that for three years," I said. "I decided it meant you'd come if I ever called."

"I would have."

"I know that too."

The engine ticked in the cold.

"I'm not here about the terms," I said.

"No?"

"I'm here because my mother won't let me in my own house, and my father writes me letters, and the only person who's told me the truth since Thanksgiving is the man sitting in my car."

He didn't answer.

I looked at his hands on his knees, and the long surgeon's fingers, and I took one of them.
