Chapter 10: The Lake Road
The old cook's pickup was parked sideways across the Otter Lake road when we got there, with the gate boy standing in the bed holding a shotgun he didn't know how to use.
The rest of my omegas stood in the road around it in their coats.
Behind them the lake was steaming in the cold.
In front of them, forty yards off, were the wolves.
Twenty of them, in human skin, big men and women in long dark coats with the Blood Moon's red thread stitched at the cuffs.
Six Redfern warriors stood with them, looking like they wished they were anywhere else.
Thane stopped the truck behind the cook's pickup.
He didn't get out.
"Your road," he said. "Your call."
I looked at him.
"You're letting me?"
"I'm watching you." His eyes went over the twenty in the road. "If one of them moves wrong, I'm out of this truck before he finishes."
I left Robin asleep in his car seat with the beta and got out.
The cook grabbed my hand as I passed and squeezed it.
"They've been standing there an hour," she muttered. "Ugly lot."
I walked to the front of the pickup.
The man at the head of the Blood Moon wolves stepped forward to meet me.
He was red-haired and handsome and very sure of himself, with a smile that didn't reach anything.
"You'd be the omega," he said.
"I'd be the owner. This is my road. Turn around."
"We're expected at Redfern."
"Then go around by the highway. It's an extra forty miles. You'll enjoy the scenery."
Some of my omegas laughed.
The red-haired man didn't.
