Chapter 13: Red Eyes
Nobody in Redfern's Moon Hall breathed.
The envoy stayed on his knee at the foot of the dais with his red-haired head bowed.
Tarran stood above him in the gold bar of light, a baby in each hand, and stared down at their faces.
They were gray-eyed now, squinting and ordinary.
It didn't matter.
Three hundred wolves had seen what color they were first.
"No," Tarran said.
He said it to the babies.
Then he said it to the hall.
"No. The light's wrong. The window's dirty. Somebody clean that window."
Nobody moved to clean the window.
Behind me, the river Alpha said, quite clearly, "Light's been coming through that hole for two hundred years, Crale. Never needed a rag before."
Raine pushed herself up out of the wheeled chair.
The white wool fell off her shoulders.
"They're his," she said. "They're Tarran's. Everyone knows they're Tarran's."
Her voice cracked at the top.
"Tell them!" she shouted down at the envoy. "Tell them you're lying!"
