Chapter 18: The Vote

Thane stopped at the doors of Redfern's Moon Hall and didn't come in.

"My peace doesn't reach in there," he said. "Not till they ask for it."

"Then wait for them to ask."

"I'll be right here."

He leaned on the doorframe and folded his arms, and every Redfern wolf who went in past him ducked their head.

The hall was full.

Every bench, every wall, kids sitting on their fathers' shoulders at the back.

My fourteen omegas came in behind me in their church coats and sat together in the third row.

Nobody told them they couldn't.

Tarran was on the dais in a clean shirt now, shaved, standing straight.

Eileen stood beside him in her pearls.

She'd come back for him.

She had nowhere else to stand.

The old warrior from the anniversary garden got up on the bottom step of the dais and faced the hall.

"Pack's called a vote," he said. "Anybody object?"

"I object," Tarran said.

"Anybody who isn't Tarran?"

People laughed, nervous.

Tarran stepped forward.

"You want to strip me," he said to the hall. "Go on. Then tell me who sits the seat. You heard the envoy. You heard your own law. The firstborn the Alpha named."
