Chapter 20: The Reckoning
There were two chairs on the stone step at Cold River.
The black one, and beside it, a new one.
Same wood, same height.
Somebody had carved it overnight, and the shavings were still in the corner.
Thane sat in the black chair with a fresh white bandage across his ribs, under his shirt.
I sat in the other one.
My feet reached the floor.
He'd had them cut the legs down.
Every Alpha in the North had stayed for the court.
They filled the hall from wall to wall, and when they knelt at the start, they knelt to both chairs.
The beta brought Raine in first.
She'd been kept in the stable block for five days.
Her black hair was dull and tangled, and the white dress was gray at the hem.
She still had the big new diamond on her finger.
She looked up at me in my chair, and her face did something I'd never seen it do.
It begged.
"Raine Hollen," Thane said. "The Court holds your note and the testimony of five rogues. You bore the Blood Moon Alpha's sons and passed them off as Redfern's heirs."
