Chapter 24: The Last Road
The whole Redfern pack was standing in the road outside the pack house gate when we pulled up.
Two lines of them, one on each side, all the way down the hill to the valley road.
Every one of them was holding a sheet of glass.
Old wavy panes, some of them cracked at the corners, some with green paint still on the frames.
The noon sun hit them all at once, and the whole road blazed.
I sat in Thane's truck with Robin in my lap and couldn't get out.
"What is it?" Thane said.
"My mother's greenhouse."
I'd know that glass anywhere.
I'd washed every pane of it, every spring, since I was twelve.
The new Alpha came to my window with his hat in his hands.
"Night he tore it down," he said, "the pack went out after dark and took the glass home. A pane a family. Some of them hid it in the hayloft. My wife kept two under our bed."
He cleared his throat.
"We figured you'd want to build it again. Somewhere that isn't here."
I got out of the truck.
I walked down between the two lines.
People I'd doctored.
People who'd looked through me.
