Chapter 8: Moon Court

The Moon Court sat in the great hall at Cold River, under a roof beam older than any pack in the North.

Thirty Alphas came, with their Lunas and their betas and their best warriors.

They lined up down both sides of the hall in their good coats.

At the far end there was one chair, black wood, on a stone step.

Thane sat in it.

I stood at his right hand in a dark blue dress with the collar cut wide, so the mark showed.

Robin slept in the crook of my arm.

One by one the Alphas came up the hall and knelt on the stone in front of the King.

Thane said each one's name and "Rise," and they rose.

Tarran came eleventh.

Raine walked beside him, heavy now, one hand under her belly, the other bare.

Eileen came a step behind in pearls.

Tarran knelt.

He didn't look at me.

Thane let him stay down there a long time before he said, "Rise."

"I have a petition," Tarran said, getting up.

"Then make it."

He turned to face the hall, the way he did at feasts.

"Three years ago fate gave me an omega for a mate. I took her in. I gave her a Luna's place she never earned. In return she lost her mind."

Murmurs.

"She ran into rogue country in the dead of night. She came back carrying a pup, and she's been telling stories about me to anyone who'll listen."

He pointed at Robin without looking at him.

"I ask the Court to send her back to Redfern's care. I ask it to declare before all the packs that the boy is a rogue's get, with no claim on my name."

He waved forward his beta.

The beta was a thick-necked man who'd once let me stitch his scalp without a word of thanks.

He stood in the center of the hall and put his hand on his heart.
