Chapter 21: Founding Day
Rhett picked the helmet up off the counter and read the note once.
Then he tucked the note into his jacket pocket and carried the helmet under his arm.
"He wants me there," he said.
"He wants you where he can see you," I said. "That isn't the same."
"I know."
On Saturday we drove to the clubhouse at eleven, my truck behind his bike.
There were more motorcycles in the lot than I had ever seen, in rows to the fence, and every Rust Kings patch within two hundred miles was standing in the sun.
It was Founding Day.
Forty years, and a banner over the porch said so in red letters.
Cade stood at the top of the steps with a beer in one hand.
He had not shaved.
His vest was open over a wrinkled shirt, and he was swaying slightly on his heels.
"Here he comes!" Cade shouted. "The dead man! Make room, boys, he's brought the flowers!"
A few of the men laughed and then stopped.
Rhett walked across the gravel with the black helmet under his arm.
The crowd moved apart for him, one row at a time.
He climbed the steps and stopped in front of the shelf by the door, and he set the helmet back in its old place.
Cade watched him do it.
Then Cade's face crumpled, and he laughed.
"You think that's an apology?" he said. "You think a piece of plastic fixes it?"
"It's not an apology," Rhett said. "It's yours."
"Don't give me that."
"Ride with me, brother," said Rhett. "That's what you say to it. Say it now."
Cade went white.
"Stop," Floyd said.
The old man had come up the steps behind me with his cane, in his founder's vest with every patch on it.
He stood between his sons, and the lot fell quiet.
