He Chose Her, So I Faked My Death novel · Chapter 31 of 32

Chapter 31: Hazel

Jasper drove to the hospital in nineteen minutes, and I counted every contraction on the dashboard clock.

"Breathe," he said.

"I am breathing."

"Breathe more."

"I will bite you."

"Fine."

Nathan met us at the doors in his pajamas and a dark overcoat, with the baby bag over his shoulder.

"How did you get here before us?" I gasped.

"I slept in the car outside the house," he said. "Don't ask."

The delivery room was white and bright and smelled of soap.

A nurse in blue scrubs checked me, looked up, and smiled.

"Seven centimeters. You're doing beautifully."

"I'm not doing anything."

"You're doing the hardest thing there is."

Jasper held my left hand, and Nathan held my right, and the nurse told my brother he could leave anytime.

"I'm staying," Nathan said.

"You'll faint," said Jasper.

"I have survived a federal arrest."

At six in the morning the doctor said it was time.

I pushed until the room blurred.

I swore at everyone.

I swore at Jasper for being calm, and at Nathan for being green, and at a man named Preston Ames, who was not in the room, for a pain I could not describe to anyone.

"One more," said the doctor. "Just one."

"I can't."

"You can," said Jasper, his forehead against my temple. "You walked off a cliff for her. You can do this."

I pushed.

The sound that filled the room was thin and furious and alive.

"A girl," the doctor said. "You have a daughter."

They laid her on my chest, red and wet and shouting, with a fist as big as my thumbnail.

She had a fuzz of dark hair.

She opened her eyes, and they were gray.

I looked at her, and everything inside me went quiet and very clear.
