Chapter 5: A Grandchild for a Ledger

Jasper stepped between me and the silver sedan.

"Mrs. Ames," he said. "You have the wrong woman."

"I have the right woman, Mr. Holt." Marguerite did not raise her voice. "I know who you are, too. Get in my car, both of you, before my son's people come looking for his mother."

I looked at Jasper.

He looked at the cemetery gate, where Preston's driver was still standing by the black sedan.

"Five minutes," he said to her. "My hand stays on my gun."

"I would expect nothing less."

We climbed into the back seat on either side of her.

Her driver pulled out without a word and turned onto the coast road.

Marguerite folded her gloved hands on her purse.

"You fell down three steps last week," she said to me. "The hospital billed my son's card for the ultrasound. He doesn't read the statements. I do."

My hand moved to my stomach before I could stop it.

"Congratulations," she said. "Nine weeks."

"How do you know I'm not dead?" I asked.

"The coroner has no body, and you walk like a woman who has never once been late to her own life." She tilted her head. "Also, Miss Radcliffe, I read your marriage license the day he filed it."

I went cold all the way through.

"You knew?"

"I know your name. I know your father's company. I have known for five years." She lifted one shoulder. "My son did not ask you your last name, and I could never understand it. Preston asks about everything. He asked the bank who owned the sidewalk."

"What do you want?" Jasper said.

"I want to make a trade."

She opened her purse and took out a small brass key.

She held it between two fingers.
