Chapter 7: Soup

Celia carried the groceries in herself.

She set the two bags on the kitchen counter, went back out to the SUV, and came up the porch steps again with a big wooden crate of canned soup and oranges in both arms.

Cameron started down the steps to take it.

"Don't you dare," she said, smiling. "I'm pregnant, Cam, I'm not made of glass."

She hoisted it onto the counter and brushed her hands together.

She wasn't even out of breath.

Trudy stood at the stove with her arms folded and her glasses on the end of her nose.

"You found us fast," she said.

Celia's face fell.

"I'm so sorry. Cameron shares his phone location with me. I've been doing it for months, and I forgot, and I saw the dot on the lake at four in the morning." She pressed her fingers to her mouth. "I turned it off the second I realized. I swear I didn't tell anyone."

"Nobody's accusing you," Cameron said.

"I'd accuse her," Trudy said, under her breath.

Celia either didn't hear or chose not to.

She turned to me with wet eyes.

"I have wanted to say this since the moment I knew," she said. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't know there was a you. If I had known, I would never have said yes."

I stood by the window with my hands on my stomach.

"Cameron told you about me?"

"Last night. In front of everyone." She laughed, and it broke in the middle. "Odette didn't speak for a full minute. It was the best minute of my life."

"Why?" I said.

"Because he finally said it out loud."
