Chapter 12: The Heir

Dara's POV

Tobias came back after dark with a split lip and dirt on his knees.

I was on the porch, and I stood up so fast the quilt fell off my shoulders.

"Where have you been? You said the fence line."

"Inside," he said. "Please. Hester too."

Hester was already at the kitchen table.

She had come home from her invented sick neighbor an hour earlier and had not said a word about it.

Tobias sat down across from us and put both hands flat on the wood.

He told me everything in the order it happened.

He gave me the first page of the book by heart, word for word.

When he reached the sentence about my father, I stopped hearing the words and heard only my own pulse.

"The seat belongs to Standifer blood," I said slowly. "Not to the Wycliffes."

"Yes."

"And when I cut the bond, it fell."

"It fell to you. As Alpha, in your own right."

"He killed my father."

"Dirk said it to his father's face. The old man did not deny it." Tobias's voice was low. "I'm sorry. I should have told you this morning. I didn't know what it was yet, and then I did."

I looked at Hester.

She had not moved. She had not been surprised by a single word.

"Gran."

"Yes."

"You knew."

"Since the day it happened," Hester said. Her cane lay across her lap and her hands lay on it. "Sixteen years. I couldn't prove it. I couldn't say it out loud in a pack that had already chosen the new Alpha."

"You could have told me."

"You were eleven, and then you were fifteen, and then you were twenty and in love with a Wycliffe." Her grey eyes held mine. "If I had told you, you would have gone to the old man and asked. He would have buried you beside your father."
