Chapter 14: My Ex-Wife

I was down the stairs before I'd decided to go.

The cold hit me on the street.

Hugh hadn't kissed her back.

That was the first thing I saw, and I hated how much it mattered.

He'd gone rigid, with the small flat thing still held against his coat in one hand.

With the other he reached up and took Sabrina's wrist.

He lifted her hand off his face.

Then the other one.

He did it slowly, in full view of both lenses.

"Don't," he said.

Sabrina laughed, bright and easy, and touched her own lips.

"Old habits," she said to the photographers. "We go back a very long way."

"We went back," Hugh said. "Past tense."

The shutters kept going.

Hugh turned toward him, which I had never seen Hugh do on purpose in three years.

"You're going to print that picture," he said. "So print this with it."

Behind me, the loading dock door banged open again.

Jo came out, then the housing director, then the man in the fleece vest, who still had his pen in his hand.

"Sabrina and I were together at Stanford," Hugh said. "We were nineteen. It ended when I was twenty-five, when she took a job in London. That's the whole story. There isn't a second half."
