Chapter 15: The Empty Seat
The screen at the end of the walnut table was switched off.
Not a black square this time.
The plug had been pulled out of the wall and left lying on the carpet, which I suspected was the board chair's idea.
In front of the empty chair beneath it sat one sheet of Stratton Capital letterhead.
The woman in the grey suit slid it down the table to me before I'd even sat.
"Read the last line," she said.
It was two sentences long.
"I resign the donor's seat on the Legacy Initiative and any future seat attached to my gift. Nobody speaks for my money in that room."
His signature, the same heavy blue as the settlement.
I slid it back to her.
"That's his business," I said. "I'm here for mine."
The woman in the grey suit turned out to be the board chair.
She had been all along.
She'd just never needed to say so in front of me before.
Eight of them sat along the table.
The COO sat at the foot with his glasses in his hand.
Sabrina sat at the chair's right, in cream, with a tablet and a fresh blowout and the face of someone who'd spent the night practicing calm.
