Chapter 13: The Yard
The red dot stayed on Tomasso's chest, and his small black pistol stayed on my stomach.
Lev had his own gun on Tomasso's face.
I could hear him breathing beside me, slow and level.
"You won't say it," Tomasso said. "You'd rather bleed than give an order."
"I gave one on the steps."
"You gave a word. Anyone can say a word."
"Put the gun on the desk."
"And then what? You need me alive." He smiled, a little thinly now. "The table won't release you on a dead man's say-so. You need my mouth, darling. You've known it all week."
"I need your mouth," I said. "I don't need your hands."
I lifted my left hand, and I spoke to the ring.
"Left hand. If the pistol moves again, take the hand."
Out in the dark garden, the red light slid off his heart.
It crossed his jacket, his wrist, and settled on the knuckles around the grip.
Tomasso looked at it for a long moment.
I watched him count what it would cost him.
He set the pistol on the blotter and took his fingers off it one at a time.
"Call your man at the yard," I said.
"Nika."
"Call him now, with the phone in your left hand."
He took it out and dialled with his thumb.
"It's me," he said, when it was answered. "Stop it. The east bank. Use the code."
He listened.
"The west bank is set by hand," he said to me, flatly. "He wired it himself and he carries no phone. I can't reach him."
"Is that true?" I asked.
"I never lie about the practical things."
Lev picked up the little pistol and put it in his belt.
