Chapter 13: What I Would Have Said

Corwin shut the door and stood with the paper in his hand.

"You don't have to see him," he said. "I can tell his man the Crown receives nobody before noon."

"He came to the gate at dawn to make me feel I have no time."

"Probably."

I pulled the sheet up and looked at the ceiling, because it was easier than looking at him.

"Corwin. Six years."

He waited.

"A letter came to you that said no, and you believed it."

"It had your name on it."

"And you never came to look at my face."

He did not argue.

"No," he said.

"Why not?"

"I thought that if you had said it plainly, I had no right to stand on your doorstep and make you say it twice."

"I called it respect. It was easier than hearing it."

I turned my head.

He sat on the edge of the bed with the paper hanging from his fingers, and for once he did not look like a king.

"I would have said yes," I said.

He went still.

"If you'd come to the house when I was twenty-one and asked me in person, I would have said yes. Nobody had ever asked me what I wanted. I'd have said it to the first man who did."

"Linnet."

"I'm not saying it because of last night. I'm saying it because it's true, and you've believed the other thing for six years."

His hand closed on the paper.
