Chapter 16: No

"No," I said.

"It's already sent."

"Then unsend it."

"That's not how email works."

"It's how you're going to make it work."

He folded his arms across his chest, bandages and all.

"Buckley. You just handed thirty-five grand to two people who'd sell you for bait. Your crew's half gone. Your sales guy's buying shells with your parents' marina. You need the money and you need the hours."

"I don't need your money."

A woman came out of the bank with a toddler on her hip and walked very slowly to her car so she could hear.

"Why not mine?" he said.

"Because it's your dad's shop. It's forty years of his handwriting on masking tape. It's the only Cup you've got a real shot at."

"I've had a real shot at it for four years. I keep losing to you."

"Then lose to me. Don't quit."

He laughed, which made me madder.

"You don't get to laugh."

"You're yelling at me for giving you money."

"I'm yelling at you for thinking I'd take it!"

The woman with the toddler had stopped at her car door and wasn't even pretending now.

Hayes stepped off the tailgate.

"Everybody in your life takes from you," he said. "Your folks. Your sister. That guy. Everybody. So the first time somebody gives you something back, you can't stand it."

"That's not fair."

"It's true. Those aren't the same thing."

"I don't want to win because you weren't there," I said. "I've beaten you twice. I want to beat you a third time with you on the water. Otherwise what was the point of any of it?"

His face changed.

"That's the dumbest reason I've ever heard."

"Stop talking."

"I'm not done."

"You're done."

I grabbed the front of his gray T-shirt with both hands and kissed him.
