Chapter 17: Insurance
"Then I'm out," Hayes said into the phone. "Leave the withdrawal where it is."
"You are not out," I said.
"Ms. Buckley?"
"Blue Hour will have a policy by Friday. Don't touch his entry."
The chair sighed the sigh of a woman with forty other calls to make.
"Friday at five. A certificate in my inbox, or Blue Hour's slot goes to the waitlist."
She hung up.
Hayes was still pinning me to his truck with his forearms. He didn't look romantic anymore. He looked worried.
"Nadine. Nobody writes a fireworks policy in four days."
"Then I'll find the one who does."
I called nine insurers that afternoon from the cab of his truck.
Seven said no before I finished the word "lapsed."
One said they'd need sixty days.
One asked if I was "the one from the yacht club video."
I said yes, the one with the extinguisher. She hung up anyway.
At six, Patty came out to the bank lot in her pickup. Hayes had called her. Of course he had.
She listened to the whole thing through her open window, chewing on an unlit cigarette.
"Who'd you try?"
