Chapter 12: Lottie's Letter

Tobias opened the door, and Nan Fenner fell into the room.

She had no shoes on.

Her feet were cut, and her nightdress was soaked to the knee with frost.

"Sit down," Tobias said, and put her in the chair.

I pulled the quilt off the bed and wrapped it over her knees.

I had my own dress on crooked, and nobody remarked on it.

"How did you get out?" I said.

"Langston let me." Her teeth were chattering. "He came to my door at four. He unlocked it, and he stood in the passage with a candle, and he said, go to my brother. He'll read it to you."

"Read what?"

She held out her hand.

It was shut around something, and it was shaking so hard that I had to unfold her fingers one by one.

Two sheets of cheap blue writing paper lay in her palm, worn at the folds.

"Lottie's last letter," Nan said. "I told you I'd read it. I read the first page. I have always read the first page."

"There is a second page?"

"It was folded behind and sealed with a wafer. She wrote on the outside of it, in pencil. Do not open unless I am gone."

She wiped her nose with the back of her hand.

"I never opened it. If I opened it, she was gone."

"I kept the first page in my apron for two years."

"The second I sewed into my hem, and I never once broke the wafer."

"Last night," Tobias said slowly.

"Langston said, you've read half of it. Let my brother read you the rest, and then decide who to shoot."
