Chapter 5: Unsandwiched
"Tell me about the sandwich rule," Rosetta said, from her bed, with a face mask on and a flashcard in each hand.
"There's nothing to tell."
"You invented a food-based honesty system. There's something to tell."
I sat on my own bed with my laptop open to a stats set I wasn't doing.
"In eighth grade I wrote a note," I said.
"To a boy."
"To a boy in homeroom. It said I liked him, and I signed it with a heart, because I was thirteen and I had no self-respect."
"Oh no."
"He read it out loud in homeroom, in a voice like a game show host."
Rosetta peeled her face mask off and stared at me.
"Sixty kids heard it," I said. "So now if I have to say a true thing, I hide it in a pile of lies, and if someone laughs, the laugh lands on the lies."
"That is the saddest thing I have ever heard," Rosetta said, "and also very smart."
"Thank you."
"Where's the score right now?"
I opened my phone and showed her the text Beau had sent me, a picture of a napkin.
The napkin said: GRIFFIN 1, MIRANDA 3.
"He got one right," I said. "On Thursday. It was the one where I said I own too many cardigans."
"That was true?"
"I own eleven."
"You own eleven cardigans, and he guessed it?"
"He looked at me for a really long time," I said. "And he picked it."
"That's not a guess, Miranda. That's surveillance."
At eleven o'clock the next night, I was alone in the basement of the stats building, the one with the humming lights and the vending machine nobody trusts.
I had been typing lies for two hours, because the study room was empty and I had a set due.
