Chapter 14: The Count
We sat at the kitchen table with the ledger open between the salt and the teapot.
Torben had pulled on his sweater and brought coffee, and he stood behind my chair with one hand on the back of it.
He had not said a word about what Maisy must have seen when she opened the door.
Maisy hadn't either, which for Maisy was a kind of miracle.
"Read it to me," I said.
She put her finger under the line and read it in her grandmother's slanting hand.
"A wolf the Moon has marked takes no seed but her mate's. Her own healer will see her healthy in every way and find no cause. She is not barren. She is spoken for."
Nobody said anything.
The stove ticked.
"Healthy in every way," I said.
"I told you that three times," Maisy said. "I told you at twenty-three, and at twenty-five, and last spring. You were the healthiest woman I examined."
"And Verity told me it was nerves."
"She told you to stop trying so hard."
I laughed, once, and it came out wrong.
For five years I had counted calendar squares in the bathroom with the door locked.
I had drunk the tea.
I had apologized to Heath in the dark for something that was his mother's work and his own.
"They knew," I said. "From the first night. Verity wrote it on a slip and hid it under a plate. They knew I would never carry his child, and they let me think it was me."
"Margo," Torben said.
"Let me say it. I want to say it plainly one time."
I put both hands flat on the table.
