Chapter 6: Her Father's Letter

I held the clinic statement against my chest until the elevator doors opened.

Jonas was waiting by the car with the back door already open.

I got in and put the folder on my knee, and he drove out of the lot without a word.

Three blocks later he pulled into a parking garage and stopped on the second level, in a corner with no cameras.

"I sweep this car myself every morning," he said, turning in his seat. "Nobody has been in it but me."

I held up the statement.

"Wyndham Family Trust," I said. "My name is on it as the person who pays."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Lawson told me he pays for Poppy. He told me three years ago and every month since."

"He has told you that," Jonas said. "He has also never paid a cent."

My hands had gone cold again.

"My father's company went bankrupt," I said.

"The company did," Jonas said. "Your father moved what mattered out of it two years before he died."

He took a flat leather case from under the driver's seat and set it on the back seat between us.

Inside were a thick envelope with my name on it and a bound ledger with a black cover.

"He gave me both on the night he died," Jonas said.

"He said to hand them to you when you needed them, and not an hour before."

"Six years," I said. "You've had this for six years."

"I wanted to hand them over the first week," he said.

"He made me promise to wait until you had a reason."

"If you had known, you would have walked out on Lawson the next morning."

"And Poppy would have been alone in that clinic with nobody paying for her bed."

"I hated every day of waiting," he said. "I would hate it less if you were the one who decided."
