Chapter 22: The Court Names the Fraud
On Wednesday morning, the probate judge calls Adrian to the witness table.
She tells him to place his signed death identification beside the certified transfer schedule.
Adrian carries both documents forward.
He sets them down with care, his black pen still between his fingers.
I sit behind him with Petra, the clerk, and the board chair's representative.
Camille sits across the aisle on the other side of the courtroom, alone, one hand over the curve of her stomach.
My name is printed on the witness list.
Dr. Lena Mercer.
The judge studies the two pages without touching either one.
"Mr. Mercer, your petition describes the company transfer as a response to a confirmed death," she says.
"Is that still your position?"
"Yes, Your Honor. The events were separate. I was grieving when I made the identification."
"The corporate documents came later, after counsel advised me about continuity."
He says it smoothly.
Petra opens her operating log to the marked pages.
"The first instruction is dated Tuesday morning," she says.
"The identification was signed Tuesday at twelve minutes past six in the evening."
Adrian's shoulders tighten.
"The date reflects preparation. It does not establish execution."
"The execution record is attached," Petra says.
"Your signature is beneath the instruction to route founder-level communications through your office."
The judge looks at Adrian.
"Did you sign this schedule before or after the identification?"
"The schedule was drafted during a period of uncertainty. That does not make it an attempt to take control."
"That was not my question."
The room goes still.
Adrian swallows once.
"Before the identification was finalized."
The clerk writes the answer into the record.
The judge reaches for the death identification.
"You signed this after receiving the medical examiner's written advisory?"
"Yes."
"That advisory was a warning, Mr. Mercer, not a suggestion."
"It raised a concern. It did not prove the person was not my wife."
