Chapter 23: Every Bondsman in Richmond
Kerri looked down at the cuffs.
"Call Brantley," she said to the receptionist.
The receptionist didn't move.
Nobody on that floor moved.
It was the same quiet as the day I slapped him.
The officers turned her toward the elevator.
She passed close enough for me to smell her perfume, the one from the coat in my closet.
"You did this," she said.
"No," I said. "You filmed it."
The doors closed on her face.
At three that afternoon the state board called Ike.
He took it standing behind his desk with one hand flat on the blotter.
"Yes, ma'am," he said. "Yes, ma'am. No, ma'am, no hard feelings."
He hung up.
"Dismissed," he said. "All of it. I can write bonds tonight."
Nettie came out from under the card table.
"Say a bad word," she said. "It's a holiday. It's free."
Ike thought about it.
"Hot damn," he said.
The bar next door heard by four.
By six they'd taped a bedsheet over their own sign. BONNER IS BACK, in red spray paint.
I'd never been inside that bar.
Brantley had celebrated thirty-one verdicts in it. I'd always stayed home.
