Chapter 26: The Stand

He waited.
Lawyers leave a silence after that question. It's there for you to fill with sorry.

I didn't.
"You'd been in bed," he said.
"Asleep."
"And when the phone rang, you didn't stop to dress."
"I stopped to put on sneakers."
He hadn't expected that. I saw it in his shoulders.
"Sneakers," he said.
"I thought I might have to carry my husband to the car," I said. "You can't do that in flip-flops."

"I asked her a question."
"You were angry."
"Yes."
"Angry enough to go looking for her?"
"I went looking for my husband. A man said he was bleeding."
"A man you'd never met. At midnight. In a dark lot behind a bar."
"Yes."
He turned to the jury. He had a nice voice, too. Not as good as Brantley's.
