Chapter 17: Take Me Back

Brice held the roses out to me.

"For Mr. Tull," he said. "I heard about the fire. Terrible thing."

Samson stepped in front of me.

Brice looked past his shoulder and smiled at me, easy and warm.

"I've told the hospital I'll cover his bills," he said. "Every cent. It's the least a firm can do for a former client."

"Of course you will," I said.

Behind him, the door of Tull's room opened.

Mrs. Tull came out in her wrong-buttoned cardigan with her arms crossed.

She looked at the roses.

She looked at Brice's face.

Then she took the bouquet out of his hand and dropped it into the trash can by the nurses' station.

"My husband doesn't want your flowers," she said. "He doesn't want your money, and he doesn't want you."

A nurse looked up.

Two visitors on the bench turned their heads.

"Mrs. Tull," Brice said, in the soft voice he used for juries. "You're upset."

"You brought us groceries after the trial. I cooked your groceries for my husband."

"I'm sure I don't know what you mean."

"Get out of my husband's hall."

A security guard had started down the corridor.

Brice raised both hands, gracious in defeat.

"I'll go," he said. "I only want a word with Victoria. Five minutes. In the cafeteria, in public, with cameras. Detective Briggs can watch from the next table."

"I'm suspended," Samson said. "I'm no one's detective."

"Then you won't mind."

I touched Samson's sleeve.

"It's fine," I said.

"Victoria."

"I want to hear what he does with five minutes."

The cafeteria was nearly empty.

Brice bought two coffees and set one in front of me.

I did not touch it.

Samson sat three tables away with his back to the wall and his eyes on us.
