Chapter 18: The Wire
On Thursday at eight I rode the elevator to the ninth floor in the blue dress.
The recorder was taped flat against my ribs under the left strap, with a battery that would last three hours.
Tierney sat in the lobby with the receiver in her lap.
Samson waited in the garage, one level down, in a car he had borrowed from a neighbor.
I had my key and the lobby code.
They still worked.
I let myself in, and the apartment was full of candles.
Brice stood by the kitchen island with a bottle of wine open and two glasses poured.
He wore a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
His left wrist was bare.
"You came," he said.
"I said I would."
"You did." He crossed the room and kissed my cheek, and his hand slid down my arm and stopped short of my side. "God, you look good."
I let him lead me to the sofa.
He talked for an hour.
He talked about the firm, about the partnership, about the award they were going to give him on Saturday.
He poured me a second glass, and I did not drink it.
He drank three.
By the fourth, his voice had changed.
"Do you know what I like about you?" he said. "You never ask the one question that matters."
"What question?"
"Why I sold the car."
My heart was beating in my throat.
I made my face soft.
"Why did you sell the car, Brice?"
He smiled into his glass.
"Because I can't drive that road. I haven't gone near that turn since."
"The truck was Tull's."
"The truck was Tull's," he agreed. "I borrowed it. Russ would have given me his kidney."
"And Route 9."
"There was no light at the crossing." He shook his head, almost wondering. "She came out of the dark with a bag on her shoulder, and I never even saw her face."
