Chapter 5: Cedar

Silvan didn't speak the whole drive back.

I didn't either, until we were inside the shop and he had flipped on the lights over the hull.

"What did Lila ask you to keep from me?"

He picked up a hand plane and ran his thumb along the blade.

"Nothing that matters tonight."

"Rhett thinks it matters. Rhett smiled when he said it."

"Rhett smiles at funerals."

"Silvan."

"She asked me to look after you," he said. "That's all I'm going to say about it."

"Look after me? She hardly knew me. She died two months after I started."

"She knew enough."

"You haven't said ten words to me in four years. You stood at the back of that lawn like a stranger."

"I was waiting."

"For what? For me to sign?"

"For you to show me which one you were."

I went cold, and then very hot.

"Which one I was," I said.

"I know what you signed six months ago." He set the plane down. "I know you gave up an eight-figure trust. A woman who walks away from that much has been promised more somewhere else."

I stared at him.

"You think I gave up that money so I could get more."

"I think nobody gives up that much for nothing."

"I gave it up because Adelaide's lawyers said it would prove I was not after the money." My voice shook. "I gave it up because I wanted her to trust me. And I wanted to be allowed to stay in the house."
