Chapter 11: Whose Debts
Three weeks later, I learned whose money I had been repaying.
It was a Thursday, and Santo's consigliere had come to dinner.
He was a lean, quiet man who ate slowly and watched everything.
Daisy sat in her bouncer on the kitchen floor, kicking at the toy bar.
She had started to smile that week, usually at Santo, and he pretended not to notice.
"Gianna's father's people are asking for old paper," the consigliere said, between bites. "Giacomo's lawyer wants every loan record from the city's lenders, going back five years."
"Let him ask," Santo said.
"If he gets to your father's book, he'll find the Ferraro note. The one that went to collections."
Santo set down his fork.
"Not at the table," he said.
"I only mean," the consigliere said, "that a man who opens that book opens you. You signed the sale."
The kitchen went silent.
I looked at the consigliere, and at Santo, and at my own plate.
I thought of a green ledger on a table, and a man reading down a page, saying nothing.
"Whose book?" I said.
Nobody answered.
"Santo. Whose loan went to collections five years ago?"
The consigliere stood up. "I'll leave you."
"Sit," Santo said, without taking his eyes off me. "No. Go."
He went.
I heard the front door shut.
Daisy went on kicking at the toy bar, perfectly happy.
"Christmas Eve," I said.
"Yes."
"The men on the landing. The ones who wouldn't let us out of our own door."
"Yes."
"They worked for you."
"They worked for my father's firm." He said it flatly. "Giacomo borrowed from my father. When he couldn't pay, the note was sold to collectors, and the collectors went to your door."
