Chapter 9: A Mother's Blood
Hamish carried Finlay to the infirmary at a run, and I ran behind him.
The pack healer was already waiting with the lamps lit.
She was a gray-haired woman with a steady voice who had come to Cedar Ridge after the old healer died, and she laid the boy on the table and touched his throat.
"How long has he been hot?"
"An hour," I said. "Maybe less. He said his head hurt at the table."
"He's burning from the inside." She pulled back his eyelid.
His eye under it was gold.
"That's a wolf fever. His wolf is rising too early and his blood can't hold it."
"He's five," Hamish said. "It can't."
"It can't, and it is." She was already pulling out needles. "I've seen it twice in thirty years. Both times the child died by morning unless we fed the wolf its own line."
"Its own line?"
"Blood from the one who bore him. A wolf pup settles on the blood he was born from, and nothing else will quiet it." She looked up. "Alpha, I need the birth mother. Where is she?"
Nobody answered.
Hamish had gone gray.
Beatrix had come in behind us with her cane, and she stood in the doorway with her chin raised.
"The mother was a surrogate," she said. "A human woman. She died in childbirth."
"Then I'll try his father." The healer took Hamish's arm and drew a vial.
She held it up to the light.
She held a second vial beside it, drawn from Finlay, and mixed a drop of each in a glass dish.
