Chapter 20: The Airbase
The north fence of the airbase ran along a ditch two miles past the end of the main runway.
It was chain-link, ten feet high, with three strands of wire on top.
The gate in it looked like a stock gate.
Tor said it had been put there so the maintenance crews could bring their pickups in without walking to the main gate.
He said it was never locked, because a master sergeant could not stand to keep his own people out.
He was right.
The padlock hung open on its hasp, and the gate swung without a sound.
Wyatt drove the Peterbilt through at a crawl with the lights off.
The trailer full of silent people followed.
Forty-three of them, and a man on a bunk in the sleeper with a radio on his stomach.
Nothing moved on the base.
The hangars stood in rows along the flight line, long gray barns of corrugated steel, with the big doors shut.
Past them rose the fuel farm, a stand of white tanks the size of grain bins.
It had a fence of its own.
In the distance, the control tower stood against the stars with its glass roof dark.
