Chapter 30: Refund

I don't remember crossing the ten feet.

I was on my knees on the ramp.

Then I was on my knees beside him, with his shirt open in my hands.

The hole was small and neat, an inch above his heart.

It wasn't bleeding as much as it should have.

That was the worst of it.

"Wyatt. Look at me."

His eyes were open and quiet and a long way off.

"Wyatt."

His head turned a quarter inch toward my voice, and then it stopped.

Everything I had learned in eight years of nights came up through the floor of me.

I had said it to a thousand strangers over a thousand phones, in the voice that doesn't shake.

I laid him flat on the concrete and tipped his chin.

There was no breath.

I put the heel of my hand on the center of his chest, below the hole.

I laced the other hand over it.

"You," I said, to the man nearest. "Call it out. Count with me."

I pushed.

His ribs gave under my hands.

"One," said the man, shaking. "Two."

"Harder than that. Two inches. Don't be afraid to break something."
